The impacts of child sexual abuse and inappropriate sexualised behaviours are significant for the child. The adults around the child are also affected, often leading to heightened reactions in the systems around the child and perpetuating and maintaining presenting concerns. And for the child’s therapist, strong emotions and responses are also evoked.

This workshop aims to provide a space for therapists to firstly connect with the collide between personal-professional life when working in this space. It will offer practical information, frameworks of practice and therapeutic interventions for promoting protective behaviours when working with children who have experienced sexual abuse or engage in inappropriate sexualised behaviours.

This workshop is relevant for therapists and supervisors alike.

KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1) Increased self-awareness of the personal factors which contribute to professional experiences when working with clients with sexualised behaviours, and identify self-care needs and responses.

2) Understand the facts about child sexual abuse and impacts of sexual abuse on the developing child.

3) Explore the nature of grooming behaviours and the impacts of this on the child’s patterns of relating.

4) Distinguish between sexual behaviours that are typical and developmentally appropriate, and inappropriate sexualised behaviours.

5) Identify clinical considerations when working therapeutically with children who have experienced, or suspected to have experienced sexual abuse, or who engage in inappropriate sexualised behaviours.

6) Articulate a framework for responding to inappropriate sexualised behaviours.

7) Identify the key components of a protective behaviours intervention applied in child therapy, and increased confidence to implement this in practice.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This workshop is highly relevant for both clinicians and supervisors engaged in therapy/counselling with children, including psychologists, play therapists, social workers, counsellors, occupational therapists etc. It is also suitable for those working with vulnerable children and families across the community services sector in case management roles such as family support services, child safety, and OoHC.
